A Devastating Shift Just One Year Has Caused in America

In late October 2024, the landscape was completely separate. Ahead of the US presidential election, reflective Americans could admit the nation's significant faults – its injustices and imbalance – but they continued to identify it as America. A democratic nation. A land where legal governance meant something. A state led by a respectable and upright official, despite his elderly years and declining health.

These days, as October 2025 ends, countless Americans hardly identify the nation we inhabit. People alleged as unauthorized foreigners are detained and forced into transport, occasionally denied due process. The left side of the “people’s house” – is being torn down to build a lavish ballroom. The president is targeting his political rivals or supposed enemies and insisting the justice department transfer a massive sum of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are deployed to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – liberated itself of regular press examination as it spends what could amount to almost one trillion dollars of taxpayer money. Colleges, law firms, media outlets are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are handled as members of the royal family.

“America, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the limit toward dictatorship and fascism,” an American historian, stated in August. “In the end, faster than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we have become, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

However, we know that Trump was properly voted in. Following his profoundly alarming initial presidency and following the alerts that came with the awareness of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly said publicly he would rule as a tyrant just on day one – a majority of citizens selected him instead of his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as today's circumstances is, it's more frightening to understand that we are just nine months into this presidential term. Where will an additional three years of this downfall find us? And what if that period becomes a more extended duration, as there is not anyone to stop this ruler from deciding that additional tenure is necessary, maybe for security concerns?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There will be legislative votes in 2026 that could bring a different balance of power, should Democrats retake the Senate or House of Congress. We have public servants who are attempting to apply some accountability, for example lawmakers that are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure from legal authorities.

And a national vote three years from now could begin our journey to recovery exactly as last year’s election put us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see millions of Americans protesting in the streets across municipalities, similar to recent recently in the No Kings rallies.

A former official, stated lately that “the slumbering force of the US is awakening”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in that decade or amid anti-war demonstrations or throughout the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the unstable nation ultimately corrected itself.

The author states he understands the indicators of that awakening and observes it occurring currently. For proof, he references the widespread marches, the extensive, cross-party resistance regarding a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous defiance by media to accept military mandates they only publish what is sanctioned.

“The dormant force always remains dormant till some venality turns extremely harmful, some action so contemptuous of the common good, some brutality so loud, that he has no choice but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the big questions endure: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its status internationally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts indicates that the final scenario is correct; that everything might be lost. My positive feelings, however, advises me that we must try, in whatever ways available.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that means encouraging reporters to commit, more completely, to their mission of holding power to account. For different individuals, it could mean working on election efforts, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to safeguard voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we existed in a separate situation. A year from now? Or three years from now? The truth is, we don’t know. All we can do is to attempt to not give up.

What Provides Me Optimism Currently

The interaction I have during teaching with aspiring reporters, that are simultaneously idealistic and grounded, {always
