Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.
Playoff Decider
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
