Celebratory Displays along with a Cheer for Life: Israelis Delight over Deal Bringing Back Captives

The announcement of an agreement expected to lead to the freeing captives detained within Gaza for over two years has caused joy and comfort across the nation.

A group that has advocated for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza expressed ā€œprofound gratitudeā€ for what it termed a ā€œlandmark achievementā€.

The deal—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—involves the return of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.

To date, 148 captives have come back—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 sets of remains have been recovered while eight hostages were freed by rescue.

Celebratory Moments in Hostages’ Square

Joyous gatherings have unfolded in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled ahead of the deal being signed.

A crowd started applauding and moving to music under US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a placard saying: ā€œWe love Trump.ā€

ā€œThis is a wondrous day,ā€ the woman said.

A different person, 50-year-old Yael, cried while observing the crowd dancing.

ā€œI’m very excited—it’s such a relief,ā€ she said. ā€œWe need to see their return home to their loved ones.ā€

Families Celebrate with Fireworks

The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news that he would be homecoming.

ā€œThey’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!ā€ Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her child.

Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: ā€œMy son, you are returning home.ā€

The joy was palpable throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv following the news.

Freed Hostages Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses

Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then cheering ā€œL’chaimā€, meaning ā€œto lifeā€. She has advocated for the freedom of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.

Their brother Liran Berman posted: ā€œMy dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.ā€

The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, with her remains recovered from an underground passage in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other hostage families in pushing for an agreement that brings the homecoming of all those still detained in Gaza.

ā€œI can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and now it’s here,ā€ he said.

He said he felt ā€œshatteredā€ that his cousin will not be among those returning home yet felt ā€œradiant with happinessā€ for the relatives of the captives who are at last coming back.

Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel together with his sibling.

Guarded Hope from Family Members

Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living ā€œa dream stateā€.

ā€œWe’re more than grateful to President Trump and everything he has accomplished for us. We feel that this could be the beginning of the end of this nightmare, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,ā€ she commented.

However, she warned that it remained too soon to rejoice.

ā€œBefore the final captive returns, we’re not opening the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,ā€ she affirmed.

ā€œNumerous events might occur until the last moment so this is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only when the last captive is safely home.ā€

Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
