‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to scoring with the Basque club

The first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in the UK, an young representing Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in the country, against the English side two months later, he converted. The third time, against Manchester City six weeks after that, sure enough, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, too. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they took him off.

“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the typical thing. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at the club. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the training ground, the city, the morning session is ready to commence; after it, the short journey to the airport and another flight to Britain, now to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a challenging campaign for the team, partly because of the demands of being here. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river accompanied by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are unique and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

He considered it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that produced the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in that summer, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to live the best days of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the UCL.

“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the first team but with every stage you advance through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in six games between his bow and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as a turning point because it made me change the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then go home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. All the minor details: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”

Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed upset in 2020, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come they need someone where you play, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Little surprise he states savor the moment. All the more so after the previous season which, at times, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
