Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The former official declared he would withdraw from public duties after House committee made public his repeated communications with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

Summers commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who previously headed the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed messages showed that Summers corresponded with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted Summers' choice to step down.

"We value his many contributions and the insight he brought to the Board," the company remarked.

Political Context

This news comes after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on this week to pass a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its files on Epstein.

The bill will subsequently proceed to the office of the White House for approval. He has stated he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following pressure from his supporters.

Message Details

A batch of financier-linked messages made public by the House Oversight Committee last week included multiple prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The messages revealed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with he often seeking to link the academic to influential international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the emails were made available with the public, the former official stated he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in communicating with the financier".

He added that he wanted "to restore confidence and fix bonds with the individuals nearest to me".

Career Background

The economist held senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He led the university from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments recently on this week, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following his statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that he was not connected with the institution.

He joined the board of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
