The rate of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the continental United States, according to the study. The rate of its temperature rise has reportedly increased notably in the last half-decade.

"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."

The research positions the New England region among the fastest-warming zones in the world, together with the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "New England is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the researcher noted.

For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of the New England region.

They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by approximately 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.

"That is extremely rapid heating, which is alarming," commented the researcher.

In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Atlantic current. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by prevailing winds.

"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being held in the sea like a huge storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a recipient of that energy."

Consequences on Life and Weather

Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has experienced severe climate events in recent years, including enormous flooding and prolonged dry spells.

The rising heat endangers cherished elements of local culture:

  • Syrup production is facing challenges by shifting seasonal patterns.
  • Cold-weather activities are impacted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or moved multiple times due to a lack of ice.
  • Ski resorts have struggled because of insufficient snow.

"I live just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds regularly," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much vanished from large parts of southern New England."
